Fortnite v42.20 equips creators with new mechanics to dial up the terror for Fortnitemares, alongside critical timeline updates for Rocket Racing templates and massive improvements in UEFN.
New Mechanics & Horror Tools
• Unarmed Weapon Update: Build immersive first- and third-person close-combat experiences without relying on workarounds. Players can now execute two-hit punch combos or shove opponents. This is perfect for weaponless horror chases or custom brawlers.
• Channel API: Take full control of custom voice and text channels. You can isolate players by cutting comms when a squad splits up, or trigger tension-filled gameplay by detecting when a player starts speaking to alert nearby guards.
• Player Movement Device: Maximum values are now uncapped for extreme mobility. Sprint Maximum Speed is increased to 11,000, Tactical Sprint Multiplier to 20, and Maximum Acceleration to 10,000.
Rocket Racing Template Changes (Action Required)
On October 1, Rocket Racing is leaving Fortnite. All UEFN islands built with Rocket Racing templates will be unpublished and unplayable, and publishing will be disabled for these templates.
• What you need to do: If you want to keep your racing maps alive, you must convert them into standard brand islands. All essential developer tools (Track Spline Tool, Boost Pads, Spawners) have been successfully migrated so you can continue building custom racing experiences outside the template.
UEFN & Ecosystem Upgrades
• Live Widget Previews: You can now preview and interact with UI widgets directly in the UEFN editor. Test interactions and watch animations play in real time without needing to launch a session.
• Discover Page Feedback: Players can now directly "Like" or "Dislike" an island from its details page in Discover once they have played it.
• Auto-Localization: Fortnite Communities posts now automatically machine-translate into the reader's native language, expanding your global reach.
• Verse API Migration: Marketplace Verse APIs have moved to UnrealEngine.com/Marketplace so any Epic game project can add entitlement purchases. Existing Fortnite.com aliases remain active, meaning no immediate changes are required for your current projects.
New Weapons & Assets
Stock up your item spawners with the latest additions to the Content Browser:
• Weapons: Reaper Sniper Rifle, Overpowered Pump Shotgun, Overclocked 8-Bit Shotgun, Balloon Popper Assault Rifle, and the Accelerant Drum Gun.
• Prefabs & Galleries: The Stone Sanctum Set is now available for your structural needs.
